What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!
Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.
We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When is aerial photography needed?
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Aerial photography laws
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
