What does drone/aerial photography mean?

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.

Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!

The AIM aerial photography system

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.

With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

Aerial Image Masters is also insured up to £5 million, so there are no extra costs to factor into your budget calculations. With a package from us, you are guaranteed a minimum of two drones, a pilot and camera operator, risk and site assessment and footage transfer.

When is aerial photography needed?

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws governing aerial photography

The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.

The CAA state that a drone must: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Clients and applications for drone aerial photography

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Real Estate

Do you halve a building you want to put up for sale? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

Among the information you can present, it is possible to show the shape and size how the building is situated in relation to its environs, including any of your outhouses or land, if applicable. Take things up a notch when you use our package that lets you have regular interior images of the building with exterior images of the building itself and the surrounding area.

Holiday Lets

How do you show your holiday let in the best possible light to your renters? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? With aerial pictures and footage, you can highlight the best features of your building.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Drone filming is the best solution for you whether you are interested in shooting the entire video from a height or would rather take only a few shots to add something to the video. Aerial Image Masters is one of those who are taking music videos to a whole other level with aerial filming as they were charged with shooting the video for the newest single by Red Sky July.

We were able to achieve sweeping eye level shots, close in shots and of course, aerial shots, all with the drone which we used to shoot the whole video. Drones are flexible enough to be used in place of a steady-cam or Ronin for seamlessly taking shots at close range. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promotional Films

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Mega Camps specialise in providing wonderful activities for children to engage themselves with during school holidays, from many bouncy castles to a monstrous slip’n’slide, and a go-cart track. In addition to highlighting the scale or scope of Mega Camps’ business to customers, the videos we made using the drone added extra spice to their activities to show just how much fun they are for the kids. For another one of our clients, Boundless TV, we took exterior footage of the imposing manor house within which their programme was recorded.
