What does drone/aerial photography mean?

Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.

Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.

The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!

Our aerial photography setup

Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

Uses of aerial photography

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing aerial photography

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.

You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.

Clients and applications for drone aerial photography

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. Here are just some of the projects that we have worked on, please contact us if you have any other projects in mind:

Attracting Property Buyers

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

You will be able to show your buyers exactly how what shape or size the property is and how it is positioned in relation to other buildings or land that are yours and the larger surroundings. We can offer a package that includes both standard interior pictures as well as the overhead and area shots to really sell your property to potential buyers.

Vacation home to let

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? Sure, you must be able to provide standard interior pictures of the rooms, but don’t you think you need to do more if your would-be guests have never visited your country or vicinity before? With aerial pictures and footage, you can highlight the best features of your building.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Drone filming is the best solution for you whether you are interested in shooting the entire video from a height or would rather take only a few shots to add something to the video. Aerial Image Masters is one of those who are taking music videos to a whole other level with aerial filming as they were charged with shooting the video for the newest single by Red Sky July.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. Drones are flexible enough to be used in place of a steady-cam or Ronin for seamlessly taking shots at close range. Please contact us and let us know what concerns or questions you may have in case you are not yet sure how a drone can be of benefit to you and your project.

Promo Films

Having been involved in promotional videos for a number of clients, it is easy to see how aerial photography and filming can add that extra look of professionalism to your client or business. We enjoyed working with our clients at Mega Camps to produce their promotional film.

Their business is all about kids as they provide exciting day activities for children when they are on a school break, including loads of bouncy castles, a go-cart track, and a large slip’n’slide. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. For Boundless TV, we were pleased to film the exterior of the gigantic manor house where they record their programme.
