What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?

A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.

For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

The AIM aerial photography system

Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. The Inspire 1 allows us to record dramatic shots regardless of the situation due to the 4K broadcast-level camera attached to it. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.

We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

When you can use aerial photography

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. You might have noticed that many TV programmes use drone shots to take fascinating angles which are used to lay emphasis on an object, show a point of view, or switch up the setting of a scene.

Laws governing aerial photography

The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.

The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.

You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.

Aerial photography clients / applications

The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. You may find examples of some of our past projects below, but if you would like to do some other project, please let us know by contacting us:

Attracting Property Buyers

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. We can offer a package that includes both standard interior pictures as well as the overhead and area shots to really sell your property to potential buyers.

Vacation rental

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? An incredible way to really show off your property is to add aerial images and video.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Filming your music video with drones is the solution you are looking for whether you want to shoot the entire video from a height, or only want to add some interesting variety to the video. With Red Sky July’s latest single under our belt, we at Aerial Image Masters are among those leading the movement of popular videos that have been shot using aerial filming.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promotional Videos

Having been involved in promotional videos for a number of clients, it is easy to see how aerial photography and filming can add that extra look of professionalism to your client or business. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. In another promotional video, this time for Boundless TV, the client wanted us to film the exterior of the manor house where their programme was recorded.
