What does drone/aerial photography mean?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
Our aerial photography setup
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When you can use aerial photography
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. You might have noticed that many TV programmes use drone shots to take fascinating angles which are used to lay emphasis on an object, show a point of view, or switch up the setting of a scene.
Laws governing drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be at least 150 meters away from congested areas not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
