What does aerial/drone photography entail?

A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. The costly nature of such shoots meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford them.

You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

AIM aerial photography System

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.

Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.

With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When is aerial photography needed?

Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.

A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.

You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

The Property Market

Do you have a property you would like to sell? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. We can offer a package that includes both standard interior pictures as well as the overhead and area shots to really sell your property to potential buyers.

Letting your property to holiday renters

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? Sure, you must be able to provide standard interior pictures of the rooms, but don’t you think you need to do more if your would-be guests have never visited your country or vicinity before? An incredible way to really show off your property is to add aerial images and video.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

We were able to achieve sweeping eye level shots, close in shots and of course, aerial shots, all with the drone which we used to shoot the whole video. Once you have a drone, you can do without a Ronin or steady cam as drones make it possible to produce seamless footage shot at a close range. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promotional Videos

Having been involved in promotional videos for a number of clients, it is easy to see how aerial photography and filming can add that extra look of professionalism to your client or business. We enjoyed working with our clients at Mega Camps to produce their promotional film.

Mega Camps is a company that loads kids with fun during their breaks from school with their exciting day activities such as a large slip’n’slide, a go-cart track, and numerous bouncy castles. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. For Boundless TV, we were pleased to film the exterior of the gigantic manor house where they record their programme.
