What does aerial/drone photography entail?

A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.

The AIM aerial photography system

Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When is aerial photography needed?

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws governing aerial photography

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There are too many drone photography applications to count. You may find examples of some of our past projects below, but if you would like to do some other project, please let us know by contacting us:

Real Estate

Are you ready to sell your house? Would it benefit from a complete overview of the size and footprint of the grounds? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

You will be able to show your buyers exactly how what shape or size the property is and how it is positioned in relation to other buildings or land that are yours and the larger surroundings. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Holiday Lets

How do you show your holiday let in the best possible light to your renters? It is compulsory to provide pictures of the interior of the rooms you are letting, but shouldn’t you consider that whoever will be renting your property might not be familiar with your area? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

Our promotional video for Chez Mouret allowed the owners of the gates to explain their property with clear visual aid by allowing guests to see how the property is laid out in relation to itself and the surrounding areas.

Events & Music Videos

Drone filming is the best solution for you whether you are interested in shooting the entire video from a height or would rather take only a few shots to add something to the video. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

With the drone, we were able to achieve more than aerial shots alone, including sweeping shots at eye level and close in shots. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. Please contact us and let us know what concerns or questions you may have in case you are not yet sure how a drone can be of benefit to you and your project.

Promo Films

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

Mega Camps specialise in providing wonderful activities for children to engage themselves with during school holidays, from many bouncy castles to a monstrous slip’n’slide, and a go-cart track. Not only did the shots we took show precisely how large and wide their business is, but they also spiced things up a bit by adding a bit of glamour to the exciting activities they had for children. For Boundless TV, we were pleased to film the exterior of the gigantic manor house where they record their programme.
