Explaining aerial or drone photography
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.
Our aerial photography equipment
The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

When you can use aerial photography
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Laws governing aerial photography
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The CAA state that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
