What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.
When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.
Our aerial photography setup
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Laws of drone photography
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The CAA specifies that a drone must: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
Aerial photography clients / applications
The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:
