Explaining aerial or drone photography

In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.

When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.

Our aerial photography equipment

Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

What is aerial photography used for?

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.

The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Aerial photography clients / applications

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. These are some of the projects we have completed for clients, feel free to contact us anytime if there something you would like to do other that what you find below:

The Property Market

Do you halve a building you want to put up for sale? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Holiday rental

How do you convince holiday makers to rent your holiday let? While you have to present standard interior pictures to potential renters, what do you do if they are entirely now to your locale or country? With aerial pictures and footage, you can highlight the best features of your building.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. With Red Sky July’s latest single under our belt, we at Aerial Image Masters are among those leading the movement of popular videos that have been shot using aerial filming.

With the drone, we were able to achieve more than aerial shots alone, including sweeping shots at eye level and close in shots. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Projects

With the numerous promotional videos we have worked on, we have witnessed first-hand the special touch that can be added with drone filming and photography to make a business look more professional. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

Mega Camps specialise in providing wonderful activities for children to engage themselves with during school holidays, from many bouncy castles to a monstrous slip’n’slide, and a go-cart track. Mega Camps was able to use the promotional video we helped create to highlight the best parts of their business by showing the scope of the business and the activities they have. Our clients from Boundless TV needed exterior footage of the large manor house inside which their programme was set.
