What is aerial / drone photography?
A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. The costly nature of such shoots meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford them.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
AIM aerial photography System
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.
The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

What is aerial photography used for?
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Laws governing aerial photography
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.
You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.
