What does aerial/drone photography entail?

Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.

Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

The AIM aerial photography equipment

Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

What is aerial photography used for?

Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing aerial photography

The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.

The CAA state that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.

You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There are so many applications for aerial photography. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Attracting Property Buyers

Are you ready to sell your house? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? Regular photographs are great, but are not sufficient for giving potential buyers a good look at a building, but we have captured several buildings to produce images and footage that paint the most accurate picture of a property and its features.

You will be able to show your buyers exactly how what shape or size the property is and how it is positioned in relation to other buildings or land that are yours and the larger surroundings. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Holiday rental

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? The best solution would be to add drone footage and pictures to portray your property in the best light.

In the promo video we created for Chez Mouret, the owners of the gates were provided with a tool with which to demonstrate the property’s layout in relation to the areas around.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. With Red Sky July’s latest single under our belt, we at Aerial Image Masters are among those leading the movement of popular videos that have been shot using aerial filming.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. A drone lets you do way more without having to use a Ronin or steady cam to achieve seamless, steady close in videos. Even if you don’t see quite clearly how your video will benefit from aerial filming, we are more than willing to advise you and help you find a solution that works for you, so please don’t hesitate to call us.

Promotional Films

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. We enjoyed working with our clients at Mega Camps to produce their promotional film.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. Mega Camps was able to use the promotional video we helped create to highlight the best parts of their business by showing the scope of the business and the activities they have. For another one of our clients, Boundless TV, we took exterior footage of the imposing manor house within which their programme was recorded.
