What does drone/aerial photography mean?

A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.

Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

Our aerial photography setup

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

You don’t have to worry about additional expenditure over the course of your project as we are fully insured up to £5 million. With a package from us, you are guaranteed a minimum of two drones, a pilot and camera operator, risk and site assessment and footage transfer.

When you can use aerial photography

Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

The CAA state that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Applications for drone photography and clients

The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. These are some of the projects we have completed for clients, feel free to contact us anytime if there something you would like to do other that what you find below:

Selling Your House

Are you looking to find buyers for your property? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

You will be able to show your buyers exactly how what shape or size the property is and how it is positioned in relation to other buildings or land that are yours and the larger surroundings. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Vacation home to let

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? While you have to present standard interior pictures to potential renters, what do you do if they are entirely now to your locale or country? An incredible way to really show off your property is to add aerial images and video.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. A drone lets you do way more without having to use a Ronin or steady cam to achieve seamless, steady close in videos. Please contact us and let us know what concerns or questions you may have in case you are not yet sure how a drone can be of benefit to you and your project.

Promotional Videos

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. We enjoyed working with our clients at Mega Camps to produce their promotional film.

Their business is all about kids as they provide exciting day activities for children when they are on a school break, including loads of bouncy castles, a go-cart track, and a large slip’n’slide. Not only did the shots we took show precisely how large and wide their business is, but they also spiced things up a bit by adding a bit of glamour to the exciting activities they had for children. For Boundless TV, we were pleased to film the exterior of the gigantic manor house where they record their programme.
