What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
Our aerial photography equipment
The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When you can use aerial photography
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Aerial photography laws
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
