Explaining aerial or drone photography
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.
There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Drone photography laws
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.
The CAA state that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
