Explaining aerial or drone photography

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.

To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.

The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!

Our aerial photography equipment

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.

The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.

The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Drone photography laws

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Drone photography applications / clients

The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Real Estate

Are you ready to sell your house? Would you like to fully capture the footprint of the grounds and the size of the property? Regular photographs are great, but are not sufficient for giving potential buyers a good look at a building, but we have captured several buildings to produce images and footage that paint the most accurate picture of a property and its features.

It is possible to show exactly how large the building is and its shape, as well as its relationship to the environs in terms of where it is situated and any buildings or land that you own. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Holiday rental

How do you show your holiday let in the best possible light to your renters? It is compulsory to provide pictures of the interior of the rooms you are letting, but shouldn’t you consider that whoever will be renting your property might not be familiar with your area? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

The promotional video we created for Chez Mouret provided the owners of the gates with a useful visual aid to illustrate the layout of the property and its environs to guests.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. There are numerous high profile videos that are embracing this new advance in filming and Aerial Image Masters have been part of this movement when we were commissioned to film the video for Red Sky July’s newest single.

We were able to achieve sweeping eye level shots, close in shots and of course, aerial shots, all with the drone which we used to shoot the whole video. A drone lets you do way more without having to use a Ronin or steady cam to achieve seamless, steady close in videos. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promotional Videos

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. We were happy to be involved in the promotional video for our client at Mega Camps.

Their business is all about kids as they provide exciting day activities for children when they are on a school break, including loads of bouncy castles, a go-cart track, and a large slip’n’slide. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
