Explaining aerial or drone photography
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.
AIM aerial photography System
At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.
Laws of drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
The CAA state that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
