What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
Our aerial photography equipment
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Laws governing aerial photography
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be at least 150 meters away from congested areas not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
Applications for drone photography and clients
There are too many drone photography applications to count. You may find examples of some of our past projects below, but if you would like to do some other project, please let us know by contacting us:
