Explaining aerial or drone photography

In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.

When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.

The AIM aerial photography equipment

Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When you can use aerial photography

There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Aerial photography laws

To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.

You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.

Clients and applications for drone aerial photography

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. These are some of the projects we have completed for clients, feel free to contact us anytime if there something you would like to do other that what you find below:

Selling Your House

Do you halve a building you want to put up for sale? Would a comprehensive overview of its ground plan and size advance a sale? Standard photography is not sufficient for capturing all the angles of a property and we have helped clients film and photograph their properties to ensure potential buyers have a more thorough look at the property.

Among the information you can present, it is possible to show the shape and size how the building is situated in relation to its environs, including any of your outhouses or land, if applicable. We can offer a package that includes both standard interior pictures as well as the overhead and area shots to really sell your property to potential buyers.

Holiday rental

How do you show your holiday let in the best possible light to your renters? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

The promotional video we created for Chez Mouret provided the owners of the gates with a useful visual aid to illustrate the layout of the property and its environs to guests.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. The versatility of the drone means that it is not necessary to have a steady-cam or Ronin in order to gain incredibly smooth, close-in footage. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Videos

Having been involved in promotional videos for a number of clients, it is easy to see how aerial photography and filming can add that extra look of professionalism to your client or business. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. Not only did the shots we took show precisely how large and wide their business is, but they also spiced things up a bit by adding a bit of glamour to the exciting activities they had for children. Our clients from Boundless TV needed exterior footage of the large manor house inside which their programme was set.
