Explaining aerial or drone photography

Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

The AIM aerial photography equipment

The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.

Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.

With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When is aerial photography needed?

There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Drone photography laws

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.

Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.

Clients for aerial photography and applications

There are too many drone photography applications to count. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Selling Real Estate

Do you halve a building you want to put up for sale? Would you like to fully capture the footprint of the grounds and the size of the property? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

Not only can you highlight the shape and size of the building, but you can also demonstrate its position and distance from other features in the surrounding area, including any land or outhouses you might own. We can offer a package that includes both standard interior pictures as well as the overhead and area shots to really sell your property to potential buyers.

Vacation rental

How do you convince holiday makers to rent your holiday let? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? An incredible way to really show off your property is to add aerial images and video.

In the promo video we created for Chez Mouret, the owners of the gates were provided with a tool with which to demonstrate the property’s layout in relation to the areas around.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. There are numerous high profile videos that are embracing this new advance in filming and Aerial Image Masters have been part of this movement when we were commissioned to film the video for Red Sky July’s newest single.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. Once you have a drone, you can do without a Ronin or steady cam as drones make it possible to produce seamless footage shot at a close range. Even if you don’t see quite clearly how your video will benefit from aerial filming, we are more than willing to advise you and help you find a solution that works for you, so please don’t hesitate to call us.

Promotional Films

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. Our clients from Boundless TV needed exterior footage of the large manor house inside which their programme was set.
