What does aerial/drone photography entail?
A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. The costly nature of such shoots meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford them.
Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
The AIM aerial photography equipment
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 allows us to record dramatic shots regardless of the situation due to the 4K broadcast-level camera attached to it. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When you can use aerial photography
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Laws of drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.
