What does aerial/drone photography entail?

In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. The costly nature of such shoots meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford them.

Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.

Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

AIM aerial photography System

The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. The Inspire 1 allows us to record dramatic shots regardless of the situation due to the 4K broadcast-level camera attached to it. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

What is aerial photography used for?

There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Drone photography laws

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.

The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Applications for drone photography and clients

The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Real Estate

Do you have a property you would like to sell? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

It is possible to show exactly how large the building is and its shape, as well as its relationship to the environs in terms of where it is situated and any buildings or land that you own. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Holiday rental

How do you make sure potential renters get to see your holiday rental property at its best? Sure, you must be able to provide standard interior pictures of the rooms, but don’t you think you need to do more if your would-be guests have never visited your country or vicinity before? The best solution would be to add drone footage and pictures to portray your property in the best light.

The promotional video we created for Chez Mouret provided the owners of the gates with a useful visual aid to illustrate the layout of the property and its environs to guests.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. Aerial Image Masters is one of those who are taking music videos to a whole other level with aerial filming as they were charged with shooting the video for the newest single by Red Sky July.

We were able to achieve sweeping eye level shots, close in shots and of course, aerial shots, all with the drone which we used to shoot the whole video. A drone lets you do way more without having to use a Ronin or steady cam to achieve seamless, steady close in videos. Please contact us and let us know what concerns or questions you may have in case you are not yet sure how a drone can be of benefit to you and your project.

Promo Films

With the numerous promotional videos we have worked on, we have witnessed first-hand the special touch that can be added with drone filming and photography to make a business look more professional. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

Their business is all about kids as they provide exciting day activities for children when they are on a school break, including loads of bouncy castles, a go-cart track, and a large slip’n’slide. In addition to highlighting the scale or scope of Mega Camps’ business to customers, the videos we made using the drone added extra spice to their activities to show just how much fun they are for the kids. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
