What does aerial/drone photography entail?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
The AIM aerial photography system
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. The Inspire 1 allows us to record dramatic shots regardless of the situation due to the 4K broadcast-level camera attached to it. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

When you can use aerial photography
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Laws of drone photography
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
