What does aerial/drone photography entail?

Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

The AIM aerial photography equipment

Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

Uses of aerial photography

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.

Drone photography laws

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.

You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.

Clients and applications for drone aerial photography

There are so many applications for aerial photography. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Real Estate

Are you ready to sell your house? Would it benefit from a complete overview of the size and footprint of the grounds? Regular photographs are great, but are not sufficient for giving potential buyers a good look at a building, but we have captured several buildings to produce images and footage that paint the most accurate picture of a property and its features.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. Take things up a notch when you use our package that lets you have regular interior images of the building with exterior images of the building itself and the surrounding area.

Holiday rental

How do you make sure potential renters get to see your holiday rental property at its best? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? An incredible way to really show off your property is to add aerial images and video.

The promotional video we created for Chez Mouret provided the owners of the gates with a useful visual aid to illustrate the layout of the property and its environs to guests.

Events & Music Videos

Filming your music video with drones is the solution you are looking for whether you want to shoot the entire video from a height, or only want to add some interesting variety to the video. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

We shot the entire video using the drone and we were able to do a whole lot more than shoot from above as we also shot at eye level and close range. Once you have a drone, you can do without a Ronin or steady cam as drones make it possible to produce seamless footage shot at a close range. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promotional Projects

We have completed a good number of promotional videos for many clients and we are aware of just how much of a difference drone filming and photography can make to a promo campaign. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. Not only did the shots we took show precisely how large and wide their business is, but they also spiced things up a bit by adding a bit of glamour to the exciting activities they had for children. Our clients from Boundless TV needed exterior footage of the large manor house inside which their programme was set.
