What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?

Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.

Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.

To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

The AIM aerial photography system

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

Uses of aerial photography

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.

There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing aerial photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.

The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There are too many drone photography applications to count. Here are just some of the projects that we have worked on, please contact us if you have any other projects in mind:

The Property Market

Do you have a property you would like to sell? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

You will be able to show your buyers exactly how what shape or size the property is and how it is positioned in relation to other buildings or land that are yours and the larger surroundings. Take things up a notch when you use our package that lets you have regular interior images of the building with exterior images of the building itself and the surrounding area.

Holiday Lets

How do you make sure potential renters get to see your holiday rental property at its best? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? The best solution would be to add drone footage and pictures to portray your property in the best light.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Filming your music video with drones is the solution you are looking for whether you want to shoot the entire video from a height, or only want to add some interesting variety to the video. Aerial Image Masters is one of those who are taking music videos to a whole other level with aerial filming as they were charged with shooting the video for the newest single by Red Sky July.

We shot the entire video using the drone and we were able to do a whole lot more than shoot from above as we also shot at eye level and close range. Drones are flexible enough to be used in place of a steady-cam or Ronin for seamlessly taking shots at close range. We are here to help with any questions you may have regarding how a drone will help make your video better and if you reach out to us, we’ll be glad to offer our expertise.

Promotional Videos

With the numerous promotional videos we have worked on, we have witnessed first-hand the special touch that can be added with drone filming and photography to make a business look more professional. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. In another promotional video, this time for Boundless TV, the client wanted us to film the exterior of the manor house where their programme was recorded.
