What does drone/aerial photography mean?

In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.

Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.

The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!

Our aerial photography equipment

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.

With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

When you hire us, you don’t have to worry about potential additional costs because we are insured up to £5 million. Included in our packages are a two-person team made up of pilot and camera operator, minimum two drones, pre-site check, risk assessments, and footage transfer.

Uses of aerial photography

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.

Drone photography laws

To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The CAA state that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be at least 150 meters away from congested areas not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Aerial photography clients / applications

The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. These are some of the projects we have completed for clients, feel free to contact us anytime if there something you would like to do other that what you find below:

The Property Market

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? Regular photographs are great, but are not sufficient for giving potential buyers a good look at a building, but we have captured several buildings to produce images and footage that paint the most accurate picture of a property and its features.

Among the information you can present, it is possible to show the shape and size how the building is situated in relation to its environs, including any of your outhouses or land, if applicable. We can offer a package that includes both standard interior pictures as well as the overhead and area shots to really sell your property to potential buyers.

Letting your property to holiday renters

How do you make sure potential renters get to see your holiday rental property at its best? While you have to present standard interior pictures to potential renters, what do you do if they are entirely now to your locale or country? An incredible way to really show off your property is to add aerial images and video.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. A drone lets you do way more without having to use a Ronin or steady cam to achieve seamless, steady close in videos. Even if you don’t see quite clearly how your video will benefit from aerial filming, we are more than willing to advise you and help you find a solution that works for you, so please don’t hesitate to call us.

Promotional Projects

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. We were happy to be involved in the promotional video for our client at Mega Camps.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. With great help from the footage we were able to capture, Mega Camps was given the power to show exactly what they wanted customers to see, including the size and scope of their business, as well as their activities. Our clients from Boundless TV needed exterior footage of the large manor house inside which their programme was set.
