What is aerial / drone photography?
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.
Our aerial photography setup
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When is aerial photography needed?
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Laws governing drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
