What is aerial / drone photography?
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.
We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

What is aerial photography used for?
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. You might have noticed that many TV programmes use drone shots to take fascinating angles which are used to lay emphasis on an object, show a point of view, or switch up the setting of a scene.
Laws governing aerial photography
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.
