What does aerial/drone photography entail?

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

AIM aerial photography System

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

When you can use aerial photography

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.

Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.

Applications for drone photography and clients

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Attracting Property Buyers

Do you halve a building you want to put up for sale? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

Not only can you highlight the shape and size of the building, but you can also demonstrate its position and distance from other features in the surrounding area, including any land or outhouses you might own. We can offer a package that includes both standard interior pictures as well as the overhead and area shots to really sell your property to potential buyers.

Vacation rental

What is the best way to portray your vacation rental to those who are interested in renting? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

In the promo video we created for Chez Mouret, the owners of the gates were provided with a tool with which to demonstrate the property’s layout in relation to the areas around.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

We shot the entire video using the drone and we were able to do a whole lot more than shoot from above as we also shot at eye level and close range. A drone lets you do way more without having to use a Ronin or steady cam to achieve seamless, steady close in videos. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promo Films

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. We enjoyed working with our clients at Mega Camps to produce their promotional film.

Their business is all about kids as they provide exciting day activities for children when they are on a school break, including loads of bouncy castles, a go-cart track, and a large slip’n’slide. Mega Camps was able to use the promotional video we helped create to highlight the best parts of their business by showing the scope of the business and the activities they have. In another promotional video, this time for Boundless TV, the client wanted us to film the exterior of the manor house where their programme was recorded.
