What does drone/aerial photography mean?

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

Our aerial photography equipment

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.

We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

You don’t have to worry about additional expenditure over the course of your project as we are fully insured up to £5 million. With a package from us, you are guaranteed a minimum of two drones, a pilot and camera operator, risk and site assessment and footage transfer.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Drone photography laws

To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.

The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.

Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.

Drone photography applications / clients

There are too many drone photography applications to count. These are some of the projects we have completed for clients, feel free to contact us anytime if there something you would like to do other that what you find below:

Real Estate

Do you have a property you would like to sell? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

Among the information you can present, it is possible to show the shape and size how the building is situated in relation to its environs, including any of your outhouses or land, if applicable. Take things up a notch when you use our package that lets you have regular interior images of the building with exterior images of the building itself and the surrounding area.

Letting your property to holiday renters

How do you show your holiday let in the best possible light to your renters? Sure, you must be able to provide standard interior pictures of the rooms, but don’t you think you need to do more if your would-be guests have never visited your country or vicinity before? To make sure you present a good look at your property, you can include drone aerial photographs and videos.

The promotional video we created for Chez Mouret provided the owners of the gates with a useful visual aid to illustrate the layout of the property and its environs to guests.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. With Red Sky July’s latest single under our belt, we at Aerial Image Masters are among those leading the movement of popular videos that have been shot using aerial filming.

With the drone, we were able to achieve more than aerial shots alone, including sweeping shots at eye level and close in shots. The versatility of the drone means that it is not necessary to have a steady-cam or Ronin in order to gain incredibly smooth, close-in footage. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promo Videos

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. Mega Camps was one of the clients for whom we filmed a promotional film, and we loved every second of working with them.

Mega Camps is a company that loads kids with fun during their breaks from school with their exciting day activities such as a large slip’n’slide, a go-cart track, and numerous bouncy castles. In addition to highlighting the scale or scope of Mega Camps’ business to customers, the videos we made using the drone added extra spice to their activities to show just how much fun they are for the kids. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
