What is aerial / drone photography?
A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.
Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
Our aerial photography equipment
The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When is aerial photography needed?
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.
Laws of drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.
