What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

AIM aerial photography System

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

What is aerial photography used for?

. From sporting events to film and TV, forestry surveying, real estate, building surveys and cartography, aerial photography has a wide array of applications, including of course, weddings. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.

Clients for aerial photography and applications

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. Here are just some of the projects that we have worked on, please contact us if you have any other projects in mind:

Selling Real Estate

Do you have a property you would like to sell? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

Among the information you can present, it is possible to show the shape and size how the building is situated in relation to its environs, including any of your outhouses or land, if applicable. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Letting your property to holiday renters

How do you convince holiday makers to rent your holiday let? It is compulsory to provide pictures of the interior of the rooms you are letting, but shouldn’t you consider that whoever will be renting your property might not be familiar with your area? With aerial pictures and footage, you can highlight the best features of your building.

Our promotional video for Chez Mouret allowed the owners of the gates to explain their property with clear visual aid by allowing guests to see how the property is laid out in relation to itself and the surrounding areas.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

With the drone, we were able to achieve more than aerial shots alone, including sweeping shots at eye level and close in shots. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. We are here to help with any questions you may have regarding how a drone will help make your video better and if you reach out to us, we’ll be glad to offer our expertise.

Promotional Projects

Having been involved in promotional videos for a number of clients, it is easy to see how aerial photography and filming can add that extra look of professionalism to your client or business. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Their business is all about kids as they provide exciting day activities for children when they are on a school break, including loads of bouncy castles, a go-cart track, and a large slip’n’slide. Mega Camps was able to use the promotional video we helped create to highlight the best parts of their business by showing the scope of the business and the activities they have. For Boundless TV, we were pleased to film the exterior of the gigantic manor house where they record their programme.
