What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?

Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

AIM aerial photography System

Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. You might have noticed that many TV programmes use drone shots to take fascinating angles which are used to lay emphasis on an object, show a point of view, or switch up the setting of a scene.

Drone photography laws

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.

Aerial photography clients / applications

There are so many applications for aerial photography. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Attracting Property Buyers

Are you ready to sell your house? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

Not only can you highlight the shape and size of the building, but you can also demonstrate its position and distance from other features in the surrounding area, including any land or outhouses you might own. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Vacation home to let

How do you convince holiday makers to rent your holiday let? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

Our promotional video for Chez Mouret allowed the owners of the gates to explain their property with clear visual aid by allowing guests to see how the property is laid out in relation to itself and the surrounding areas.

Events & Music Videos

Drone filming is the best solution for you whether you are interested in shooting the entire video from a height or would rather take only a few shots to add something to the video. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Films

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. We enjoyed working with our clients at Mega Camps to produce their promotional film.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. Not only did the shots we took show precisely how large and wide their business is, but they also spiced things up a bit by adding a bit of glamour to the exciting activities they had for children. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
