What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?

A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.

Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

AIM aerial photography System

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.

The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When is aerial photography needed?

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.

Laws governing drone photography

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

The CAA state that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.

You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.

Applications for drone photography and clients

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. Here are just some of the projects that we have worked on, please contact us if you have any other projects in mind:

Attracting Property Buyers

Do you have a property you would like to sell? Would it benefit from a complete overview of the size and footprint of the grounds? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

Among the information you can present, it is possible to show the shape and size how the building is situated in relation to its environs, including any of your outhouses or land, if applicable. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Holiday Lets

What is the best way to portray your vacation rental to those who are interested in renting? While you have to present standard interior pictures to potential renters, what do you do if they are entirely now to your locale or country? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. There are numerous high profile videos that are embracing this new advance in filming and Aerial Image Masters have been part of this movement when we were commissioned to film the video for Red Sky July’s newest single.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promotional Videos

We have completed a good number of promotional videos for many clients and we are aware of just how much of a difference drone filming and photography can make to a promo campaign. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. In addition to highlighting the scale or scope of Mega Camps’ business to customers, the videos we made using the drone added extra spice to their activities to show just how much fun they are for the kids. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
