What is aerial / drone photography?
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.
Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
Our aerial photography equipment
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

Uses of aerial photography
. From sporting events to film and TV, forestry surveying, real estate, building surveys and cartography, aerial photography has a wide array of applications, including of course, weddings. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Drone photography laws
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.
