What does aerial/drone photography entail?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
The AIM aerial photography system
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.
The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

What is aerial photography used for?
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.
A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Drone photography laws
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
Applications for drone photography and clients
