Explaining aerial or drone photography

A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.

Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.

Our aerial photography setup

The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

. From sporting events to film and TV, forestry surveying, real estate, building surveys and cartography, aerial photography has a wide array of applications, including of course, weddings. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.

Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.

Aerial photography clients / applications

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Selling Real Estate

Are you ready to sell your house? Would a comprehensive overview of its ground plan and size advance a sale? Standard photography is not sufficient for capturing all the angles of a property and we have helped clients film and photograph their properties to ensure potential buyers have a more thorough look at the property.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Letting your property to holiday renters

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

With the drone, we were able to achieve more than aerial shots alone, including sweeping shots at eye level and close in shots. Once you have a drone, you can do without a Ronin or steady cam as drones make it possible to produce seamless footage shot at a close range. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Videos

With the numerous promotional videos we have worked on, we have witnessed first-hand the special touch that can be added with drone filming and photography to make a business look more professional. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Mega Camps specialise in providing wonderful activities for children to engage themselves with during school holidays, from many bouncy castles to a monstrous slip’n’slide, and a go-cart track. Mega Camps was able to use the promotional video we helped create to highlight the best parts of their business by showing the scope of the business and the activities they have. Our clients from Boundless TV needed exterior footage of the large manor house inside which their programme was set.
