What is aerial / drone photography?
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.
Our aerial photography equipment
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
. From sporting events to film and TV, forestry surveying, real estate, building surveys and cartography, aerial photography has a wide array of applications, including of course, weddings. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Drone photography laws
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.
The CAA state that a drone must: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.
