What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
Our aerial photography equipment
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When you can use aerial photography
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Laws of drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
The CAA state that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
