What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
Our aerial photography equipment
At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When is aerial photography needed?
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Aerial photography laws
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.
You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.
