What does aerial/drone photography entail?

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

Our aerial photography equipment

Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Clients for aerial photography and applications

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. You may find examples of some of our past projects below, but if you would like to do some other project, please let us know by contacting us:

The Property Market

Are you ready to sell your house? Would you like to fully capture the footprint of the grounds and the size of the property? Standard photography is not sufficient for capturing all the angles of a property and we have helped clients film and photograph their properties to ensure potential buyers have a more thorough look at the property.

Not only can you highlight the shape and size of the building, but you can also demonstrate its position and distance from other features in the surrounding area, including any land or outhouses you might own. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Holiday rental

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? With aerial pictures and footage, you can highlight the best features of your building.

In the promo video we created for Chez Mouret, the owners of the gates were provided with a tool with which to demonstrate the property’s layout in relation to the areas around.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

We shot the entire video using the drone and we were able to do a whole lot more than shoot from above as we also shot at eye level and close range. Drones are flexible enough to be used in place of a steady-cam or Ronin for seamlessly taking shots at close range. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promo Videos

We have completed a good number of promotional videos for many clients and we are aware of just how much of a difference drone filming and photography can make to a promo campaign. Mega Camps was one of the clients for whom we filmed a promotional film, and we loved every second of working with them.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. In addition to highlighting the scale or scope of Mega Camps’ business to customers, the videos we made using the drone added extra spice to their activities to show just how much fun they are for the kids. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
