What is aerial / drone photography?
A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
Our aerial photography setup
The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. The Inspire 1 allows us to record dramatic shots regardless of the situation due to the 4K broadcast-level camera attached to it. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.
Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Laws governing drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
