What does drone/aerial photography mean?
In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.
AIM aerial photography System
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

When is aerial photography needed?
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Laws governing drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.
