What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.
Our aerial photography setup
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

Uses of aerial photography
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.
There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Laws governing drone photography
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The CAA state that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.
Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.
