What does drone/aerial photography mean?
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
The AIM aerial photography equipment
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When is aerial photography needed?
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Laws governing aerial photography
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
