What is aerial / drone photography?
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. The costly nature of such shoots meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford them.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.
Drone photography laws
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.
You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.
