What does aerial/drone photography entail?

In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. The costly nature of such shoots meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford them.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

AIM aerial photography System

Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.

Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.

The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

What is aerial photography used for?

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing aerial photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.

Drone photography applications / clients

The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Real Estate

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

Not only can you highlight the shape and size of the building, but you can also demonstrate its position and distance from other features in the surrounding area, including any land or outhouses you might own. To present potential buyers with an even more complete set of pictures and footage, we can include standard pictures of the property’s interior to the area and overhead shots we would normally take.

Holiday Lets

What is the best way to portray your vacation rental to those who are interested in renting? While you have to present standard interior pictures to potential renters, what do you do if they are entirely now to your locale or country? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. Aerial Image Masters is one of those who are taking music videos to a whole other level with aerial filming as they were charged with shooting the video for the newest single by Red Sky July.

We shot the entire video using the drone and we were able to do a whole lot more than shoot from above as we also shot at eye level and close range. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Videos

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Mega Camps specialise in providing wonderful activities for children to engage themselves with during school holidays, from many bouncy castles to a monstrous slip’n’slide, and a go-cart track. Mega Camps was able to use the promotional video we helped create to highlight the best parts of their business by showing the scope of the business and the activities they have. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
