What does aerial/drone photography entail?

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

Our aerial photography setup

Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. The Inspire 1 allows us to record dramatic shots regardless of the situation due to the 4K broadcast-level camera attached to it. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.

We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When you can use aerial photography

Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing aerial photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Clients for aerial photography and applications

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Attracting Property Buyers

Are you ready to sell your house? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Vacation rental

How do you make sure potential renters get to see your holiday rental property at its best? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? An incredible way to really show off your property is to add aerial images and video.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. There are numerous high profile videos that are embracing this new advance in filming and Aerial Image Masters have been part of this movement when we were commissioned to film the video for Red Sky July’s newest single.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. Once you have a drone, you can do without a Ronin or steady cam as drones make it possible to produce seamless footage shot at a close range. Even if you don’t see quite clearly how your video will benefit from aerial filming, we are more than willing to advise you and help you find a solution that works for you, so please don’t hesitate to call us.

Promotional Films

We have completed a good number of promotional videos for many clients and we are aware of just how much of a difference drone filming and photography can make to a promo campaign. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Mega Camps specialise in providing wonderful activities for children to engage themselves with during school holidays, from many bouncy castles to a monstrous slip’n’slide, and a go-cart track. In addition to highlighting the scale or scope of Mega Camps’ business to customers, the videos we made using the drone added extra spice to their activities to show just how much fun they are for the kids. In another promotional video, this time for Boundless TV, the client wanted us to film the exterior of the manor house where their programme was recorded.
