Explaining aerial or drone photography
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

What is aerial photography used for?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.
There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Laws governing drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
