What is aerial / drone photography?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.
When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.
Our aerial photography setup
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Laws governing drone photography
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.
You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.
Applications for drone photography and clients
There are so many applications for aerial photography. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:
